Getting a job is about what you know and who you know. Its about being
current, about networking, about circles (directed graphs!) of connections.
It's an information-based process, that emphasizes forms of
representation, and social interaction. Here are some digital places
where you can make connections.
The World Wide Web Artist's Consortium (WWWAC) is an online community
of people who play important roles in the development of internet content
and technology. They operate several mailing lists, which contain
inside information about job opportunities. The lists also function as
an exchange about details of technology and user-centered
practice. Addtionally, the WWWAC runs a set of special interest
groups, on topics such as Web Design and Development, Digital
Broadcasting, and game development. If you visit or move to New York City,
attending SIG meetings in person, would be worthwhile for meeting
people and sharing knowledge.
The New York Chapter of ACM SIGCHI, the special interest group on
computer human interaction.
They run another smaller, more focused mailing list, that similarly consists of
job opportunities, and high quality informational/networking events
around New York City.
The premier set of listings about computer-science jobs around the
country, and the world. Certainly, human computer interaction and
information oriented positions are included.
An insiders group of prominent New York City interactive artists that
meets monthly to examine and discuss one artist's current work.
There are also chapters in Vancouver and Montreal. Not a source of
jobs directly, but of very interesting people and contemporary work.
Some of them are people in the curriculum.
Now based at the New Museum (again, in New York), the Rhizome online
community features
Art+Text a prominent list of events and positions, with
international scope. Also, the ArtBase, an extensive digital
collection of online art. Available in HTML & RSS forms.
A community-oriented set of city-based lists. A bit cooler than
Monster,
Hot Jobs,
and such. More interesting employers are prone to using it.
